Dick Ling
Father of S&OP

Dick’s interest in manufacturing applications led him to Arista Information Systems in North Carolina where he implemented MRP systems for companies such as Ingersoll Rand and Warner & Swasey in the early seventies. He and his staff developed MRP software with the first Master Scheduling capability in the industry. This software also had the first planning bill capability. Ollie Wight recognized what Dick was accomplishing at Arista and he asked him to conduct “Hands on MRP” class for the Oliver Wight companies in 1974. Dick ran that class with Walt Goddard and in later years with Al Stevens and John Sari. Ollie decided to expand his education offering and asked a number of people to join him to conduct education classes and consult with clients. Dick became an Education Associate in 1979 and worked with the Oliver Wight organization until 1992. He conducted classes in the US, the UK and Australia helping to grow the business and groom other instructors. Dick’s specialty was the Master Scheduling class which he authored. Ollie Wight passed away in 1983 with cancer and Dick was tapped to be a teacher in the Top Management class. Dick was teaching a class in Chicago when he got some valuable feedback from a General Manager who was in attendance. He said “Dick, I don’t get it. You say that sales and marketing, finance, operations and engineering, need to be involved in aggregate planning which you call Production Planning. Why do you call It Production Planning”? The term Sales and Operations planning was born. Dick launched the first Sales and Operations class for the Oliver Wight Companies in 1985. In 1987, he co-authored the Book Orchestrating Success which was the first book about Sales and Operations Planning. Dick began collaborating with Andy Coldrick, who had joined Oliver Wight in 1986.That collaboration lasted 28 years until Andy’s death in 2014. They worked together at Oliver Wight, and as a duo in Ling-Coldrick from 1006 till 2014. In 2009 they self-published “Breakthrough S&OP, An Assessment Guide”. In 2011, Carol Ptak and Chad Smith were updating Olick’s MRP book and they asked Andy and Dick to write a chapter on S&OP. They were very glad to do that. In 2016, Carol Ptak asked Dick to co-author a chapter in her new book that she coauthored with Chad Smith

A Demand Driven S&OP Experience by TFC (A Serious Game)

Copper Room 8th Floor Radisson Blu Hotel

€600.00

This one-day unique Demand Driven S&OP Experience workshop will allow you and your team to experience and test implementing DDMRP buffers in a simulated environment powered by The Fresh Connection (TFC). The workshop discusses the broad concepts of the Demand Driven Material Requirements Planning (DDMRP) buffer methodology, practices decision-making and participants experience the positive impact of buffer implementation in a risk-free environment. The workshop then follows an S&OP process to discover how implementing buffers in a budget constrained environment, typical of the real-world, can still deliver high service level expectations. This, while systematically reducing inventory investment AND achieving an expected Return on Investment. The experience provides a platform for organizational change management, builds confidence for your DDMRP implementation project and is relevant for leadership and/or operational staff. This workshop is co-branded and fully endorsed by the Demand Driven Institute.

Demand Driven MRP

Sapphire Room

Demand Driven Material Requirements Planning is a formal multi-echelon planning and execution method to protect and promote the flow of relevant information through the establishment and management of strategically placed decoupling point stock buffers. DDMRP combines some of the still relevant aspects of Material Requirements Planning (MRP) and Distribution Requirements Planning (DRP) with the pull and visibility emphases found in Lean and the Theory of Constraints and the variability reduction emphasis of Six Sigma. These elements are successfully blended through key points of innovation in the DDMRP method. DDMRP is the supply order generation and management engine of a Demand Driven Operating Model (DDOM). DDMRP can best be summarized as position, protect and pull. Ivan Lavatelli, Operations Leader at PwC Italy and Global Lead of PwC’s DDMRP practice will present.?

This presentation will touch on how to choose these critical SKUs for detailed relevant information, how to aggregate forecasts when necessary and how to define and build the different scenarios for making strategic decisions. You will learn in this lecture some powerful insights about these topics in order to evolve your demand planning process for your S&OP model and becoming adaptive. Demystifying the Link Between Flow and Cost

Prince William Ballroom 2

One of the most difficult things in a journey is often taking the first step. Embracing the Demand Driven Adaptive Enterprise (DDAE) Model is no different. That first step requires a fundamental shift away from cost-based decision making to flow-based decision making. What is the difference? Should companies be concerned about what will happen to cost under the Demand Driven approach? Frederic Gaurier from Trencadis will show your company exactly what to expect with cost when a flow-based operational model is implemented.
